Training Through a Slump: How to Stay Consistent

Let’s be real—everyone hits a slump. Yes, everyone. Even those of us who have been doing this CrossFit thing for over a decade. I’ve been a part of this for 12 years and coaching for 7, and I’ve had stretches where showing up felt like the hardest part. During COVID, I even took a full year off. No WODs, no whiteboard scores, just a whole lot of Netflix and guilt. It happens.

But here’s what I learned: slumps don’t define us—our response to them does.

What brought me back wasn’t some epic motivational speech or a sudden burst of discipline. It was the quiet decision to show up again, spurred on by the birth of my daughter. Once I started training 4–5 times a week consistently, everything began to shift. My lifts got stronger, sure, but more importantly, so did my mind. My stress dropped, my energy came back, I dropped 40#, and I felt more like me again. Consistency isn’t about crushing every workout—it’s about being there often enough to let the gym work its magic on you.

One of the biggest game-changers? The community at Titan CrossFit. It’s hard to stay in a funk when your workout buddy is texting you to make sure you’re coming to the 5:30am class (or more realistically noon for me). Or when your coach is nudging you to try a heavier weight because they know you’ve got more in the tank (I may just change the weights for you). This place isn’t just about barbells and burpees—it’s about connection. It’s a lot easier to stay consistent when you’re surrounded by people who genuinely care whether you show up or not.

So if you’re feeling stuck or unmotivated, know that you’re not alone—and know that it will pass. Start small. Show up twice a week. Then three. Let the momentum build. Be kind to yourself on the tough days, and celebrate the wins (even the tiny ones) on the good days.

And when in doubt? Just get to the gym. We’ll take it from there.
