Tamil Selvan, Titan of the Month, December 2025

I'm a robotics research scientist at UMBC, currently working on my PhD in Information Systems. Outside of my research, I'm a huge coffee enthusiast and an avid explorer. I love getting out on trails, hiking, and taking road trips across the country whenever I can. I'm always curious and excited to try new things.

What led you to try CrossFit?

I actually did CrossFit and martial arts from 2015 to 2020. I took a big break during COVID, and that, along with everything else, meant I put on weight, especially around my tummy, which made me feel uncomfortable. Fast forward to 2025, I was looking for a gym near Timonium. During a casual chat, my friend Lisa Lewis suggested checking out Titan CrossFit. The first time I visited, Rose gave me a tour of the facility, and that was it. I loved the place and signed up!

Why do you continue to CrossFit?

CrossFit is the perfect type of workout for me because it combines endurance with muscle strength, which is exactly what I want. My goal isn't to build a six-pack, but to stay healthy for life and maintain an athletic level of fitness. I feel fortunate that I found this incredible path relatively early on.

Describe how your attitude towards health and fitness has evolved since you began your journey.

Since starting, my approach to health has definitely changed. I've become more mindful about what I eat, and I've started building discipline. Even though I'm not perfectly consistent yet, I've started the journey and I'm actively working to stick with it. It's challenging, but also really engaging, and I enjoy that process.

Share a memorable CrossFit moment that makes you laugh or puts a smile on your face.

Honestly, every moment at Titan CrossFit is memorable because this is the first fitness class I've ever been in that is this much fun and so engaging.

There are so many great memories: falling on the rig while trying a handstand push-up; Lacee, David, Lance, Megan, Nicole, Jessica, Alexa and Randi (Coaches i have taken classes with) cheering me on to finish a tough workout; partnering with Rose one time and realizing what real CrossFit felt like; and, especially during a Hyrox event, watching Dave dance in front of me, while I was tired and resting that moment definitely motivated me to keep going and Lance looks like Sylvester Stallone to me. Everything here is just fun and totally worth it.

What are you proud of and why?

I mean it: everyone here is wonderful. When I started lifting, I could only use the empty barbell. My fellow CrossFitters and coaches were so friendly and helpful, assisting me in improving my technique, which I'm incredibly grateful for. Everyone is motivated to stay healthy and is quick to help others without making them feel bad about what they can't do yet. I went from an empty barbell to snatching 115 lbs! I feel so motivated and proud of the gradual progress I'm making. I'm absolutely sure that future sessions will be even more interesting and fun. I genuinely love this place, the coaches, and my fellow athletes.

What's your advice for other CrossFitters or people looking to start?

This is absolutely worth it. Everyone should give CrossFit a try at least once in their life, you won't regret it!

Why the coaches chose Tamil as Titan of the month:

Tamil is a truly positive and welcoming member of our community, embodying the core value of CrossFit: longevity. He consistently focuses on developing good form and skills, recognizing that moving better and staying injury-free is more important than external measures like appearance, scale weight, or keeping up with others.

He is always seeking advice and thoughtfully applies new knowledge to improve his movements every day. No matter the workout, Tamil approaches it with enthusiasm and a great attitude, never complaining.

We are so happy Tamil found Titan and is a part of our community!
